HIP REPLACEMENT HAPPY

THE GROWING REALITY OF HIP REPLACEMENTS

Hip replacement surgery is becoming increasingly common, with over 1.2 million procedures carried out globally each year. In the UK alone, 1.3 in every 1,000 people will undergo a hip replacement.

The primary risk factors? Age and arthritis. In fact, 85% of patients who receive a hip replacement also have osteoarthritis.

Interestingly, women are more likely to need hip replacements than men, accounting for 58% of cases. Even more concerning is the fact that hip replacements in people aged 45–54 have doubled over the last decade.

HOW TO LOWER YOUR RISK OF NEEDING A HIP REPLACEMENT

The great news? There’s plenty you can do to reduce your risk—and it starts with staying active.

  • Running can lower your risk of developing osteoarthritis by 18%. Since osteoarthritis is involved in most hip replacement cases, running can reduce your overall risk of needing surgery by 35–50%.

  • Not a runner? No problem. Walking is also beneficial, cutting the risk of hip surgery by around 23%.

Weight management plays a huge role too. Nearly half of the protective benefits of exercise come from maintaining a healthy body weight. A higher BMI increases your likelihood of needing a hip replacement.

ALREADY EXPERIENCING HIP PAIN?

If surgery becomes necessary, don’t delay. Early intervention often leads to faster recovery and better results.

Why? Because the longer you live with pain, the more your muscles and tissues adapt to protect the joint—creating compensations that are harder to undo post-surgery.

It’s not impossible to recover well after prolonged pain, but it may take more time, effort, and rehabilitation.

THE GOOD NEWS: HIP REPLACEMENTS WORK

Thanks to advancements in surgical techniques and materials, modern hip replacements are lasting longer and performing better.

  • Over 80% of patients report significant pain relief and improved mobility.

  • Daily tasks become easier, and quality of life dramatically improves.
